Is located at the center of the country in the south of Sousse and Monastir and on the coast, it is to 230 km in the south of the Tunis capital. The city counts 40.000 Inhabitants approximately.

History:

The Name of the city, comes from Mahdi (' the Well Directed ' in Arabic), nickname of el Kalifah Obayd Allah the chief of the Fatimides and which selected this city in 916 as bases for forwardings towards the East. At the XVth century the Spanish troops of Charles Quint seize Mahdia. At the XVIIth century the knights of Malta plunder and set fire to the city, and at the beginning of the XXth century; under French protectorate; the city know a great activity thanks to its fishing port (the n°1 in Tunisia) and its farms like olive of the Sahel, salt...
