It is located on the South-eastern coast of Tunisia, to 400 km of Tunis, and at 20 km of the town of Gabes. Matmata is populated little, it is mainly inhabited by the Berbers which occupied it for a long time. |
| History: |
Matmata is a name of Berbère origin, indeed several
thousands of years ago this village was a refuge , the
berbèrs of this area lived in special house dug under
the ground to escape from high heats of the days of
summer and from the cold of the night. The current
inhabitants of the area are mainly the Berbers,
influenced by the Arab culture, and slightly by the
tourist activity that knows this place. |

This Place has a large tourist activity, the buses come regularly with groups of tourists.
Its charm and its architecture allured all those which seen it, the famous film realizer
' Steven Spielberg ' chooses this place to film some ones of its large films like
" Star Wars " and " Raiders of the Lost Ark
