I wasn't around the turn of the century but I'm guessing, what we are thinking of Dubai now, is the same as what the Europeans who immigrated to the US were thinking when they saw pictures of the first skyscrapers.
Makes you wonder where the next land of opportunity is?

Visited there when I was about 10 years old during its early stages and I am waiting for the day I get to return. Even then it was a beautiful place with much to do.
