I wasn't around the turn of the century but I'm guessing, what we are thinking of Dubai now, is the same as what the Europeans who immigrated to the US were thinking when they saw pictures of the first skyscrapers.
Makes you wonder where the next land of opportunity is?

I was in Dubai 3 times (3x1 mounth). Before mounth I went from there. Nice to see, but nature is poor. They have only sun, very salt sea and desert, a few big towers... Better is in my country! Come to Croatia, near the Mediterian sea!!
